What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is an age-related vision condition that causes near objects to appear blurry. It typically starts in a person’s 40’s, when the lens of the eye begins to stiffen and lose flexibility. This makes it difficult to focus on nearby objects.

Presbyopia can significantly impact your quality of life. Regular daily activities like reading books, instruction manuals and food labels, scrolling through your phone, threading a needle and other close-up tasks can become daunting.

The good news is, with the help of Hill Country Vision Center - Bulverde, this common vision condition can be effectively managed, so you won’t have to compromise on your quality of life.

    • Progressive multifocals: see objects at a near, intermediate or far distance
  • Contact lenses

    • Bifocal contact lenses: different sections for reading and distance prescriptions
    • Monovision contact lenses: distance prescription in one eye and reading prescription in the other eye

Changes the shape of the cornea to correct vision. Some examples include:

    • LASIK

Presbyopia Diagnosis Treatment FAQs

What is presbyopia treatment?

Presbyopia treatment corrects age-related farsightedness to enable you to see close-up objects, such as books and electronic screens more clearly. Treatments include:

  • Eyeglasses
  • Contact lenses
  • Laser surgery
  • Lens implants
Can presbyopia be cured?

Currently, there is no cure. The good news is that our optometrists can recommend a variety of treatment options to help you see your best, from near to far.

How do I know if I have presbyopia?

If you’re over 40 and struggle with any of the following, you may have presbyopia.

  • Holding a book or a screen at arm’s length to see it more clearly
  • Needing larger print or font size to read
  • Blurry vision while reading
  • Difficulty reading in dim light
  • Eye strain and headaches when focusing on near objects

If you have one or more of these signs, schedule an eye exam and ask us about glasses, contact lenses, or other presbyopia treatment options.

Are bifocals right for me?

If it’s hard for you to read and to see things at a distance, bifocals may be your perfect solution. With bifocals, you can get two prescriptions in one. One corrects farsightedness and the other corrects nearsightedness. We offer several different types of bifocal lenses to suit your personal preference.

The staff there were knowledgeable and acted like they enjoyed working there! That makes a huge diff... erence and you can tell because it’s reflected in how they treat their customers. They did not make me feel rushed whatsoever and answered any/all questions I had. They provided actionable steps to improve eyesight and tips on protecting my eyes throughout the workday. I also was extremely impressed with the quick turnaround of getting my glasses. I would recommend them to any and everyone.

The staff and doctors at the Bulverde location actually care about their patients and are able to pr... ovide personal attention to their customers. You don’t have to wait over a week for an appointment like the chain eye doctor offices that in my opinion don’t have the personnel concern for your well being if it doesn’t fit into their schedule. Thanks for being there.

I decided to try this place based on the very high-rated google maps reviews.. and wow, were they ev... er accurate!! Every single employee I interacted with was SO smiley and kind. I’ve always been squeamish about the up-close eye exam (the dreaded old puff machine, and now it’s just the eye touch pencil looking tool) and the 2 young tech’s were so kind and patient with me. Dr. Thomas was so nice throughout the eye exam. Jamie was such a big help with helping me choose my eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses. Thank you so much to everyone who works here!!

I’m very grateful for the kind services at reception and the doctor at Hill Country Vision. While ... traveling from California to Illinois, I scratched my cornea in a dust storm and the scratch became infected. Of course, the infection exploded at 10:30 at night, the day before we were to leave the area. I spent an hour researching and reading the reviews of all the doctors in San Antonio and the suburbs. I woke up early and arrived at the office five minutes before the opening. I explained my predicament and asked if I could be seen on an emergency basis. The front desk receptionist could not have been kinder and said she would do her best to fit me in or if someone canceled, I could take the appointment. I waited approximately an hour when there was an opening. The doctor was wonderful during the exam and in her explanation of my problem. She gave me a prescription to be filled immediately. Within 24 hours my eye made progress in healing. Within a few days, I was as good as new. As this was the eye that had previously had a retina detachment, I was scared. I’m very grateful for the expertise, kindness and compassion of everyone in the office.
